After winning his first Cup in his NHL 15th
season, Dave answers some questions about the 2001 Cup Quest...
Which is more difficult to do, win the Stanley Cup the
first time or return to the finals?
Both are equally as tough. It was tough getting there the first time and it's
been just as tough to get back. This time hasn't been any easier. The emotions
are the same. I still find sleepless nights. You go to bed worrying about it and
next thing you know, it's two in the morning. I did that in Dallas, up until all
hours of the morning thinking about it. You think about scoring the winning
goal, raising the Cup, the excitement of winning it, what you're going to do
with it over the summer. You don't talk about it, but everyone goes through it.
That's the excitement of it.
Are the playoffs actually fun?
Oh yeah, they fly by. It was a blast. If we lost, I suppose you'd remember the
moments although, I don't know it'd be as much fun. Sometimes you dread talking
to the media because you want to get out of the arena and you just want to get
away from it. But yeah, it's still fun. You have a great team and a great group
of guys. Everyone is in it together and having fun together. No one is one their
own program.

What was the team's reaction when Rob
Blake was acquired?
It was the same reaction when Ray
(Bourque) came. This year it was, "Wow, what a great deal we got."
We found out after a game that Blake got traded. Then, we found out a few
minutes later he was coming here. Then, you're happy, but it's like, "Oh,
my gosh. Who's leaving?" Everyone started checking their cell phones for
messages to see if it was them.
What is Patrick
Roy's role in the locker room?
It's a quiet role. Patrick isn't one to step up and yell and scream at guys just
to build momentum. Patrick, when he says something, gets right to the point and
everyone listens. You kind of don't want Patrick to say anything in the locker
room because when he's saying something it's usually when things aren't going
good.
After seeing Sergei
Brylin's daughter being bathed in the Stanley Cup on ESPN commercials, are
you hesitant to drink from the Cup again?
No, no, no. I've seen them clean it. The guys clean the Cup regularly. I'm
surprised they did that because they said they didn't want pictures taken with
children in the Cup. There are some things the Cup guy won't let you do with the
Cup and that's one thing they wouldn't allow. I thought, "Hey, look, they
changed the policy."
